About the Role

Risk Manager position focused on Unsecured Business Lending at Kotak Mahindra Bank, requiring 7-12 years of experience, with salary not disclosed.

What You Should Know

  • FOIR (Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio) and how it caps loan eligibility
  • LTV (Loan-to-Value) ratio for secured loans like mortgages, vehicle and gold loans
  • Credit bureau score (CIBIL etc.) and how underwriters use it alongside the full bureau report
  • NPA classification stages - SMA-0/1/2, then NPA after 90 days overdue
  • Documentation for secured loans: income proof, KYC, collateral valuation, legal & technical verification

Interview Questions

  1. Walk me through how you'd underwrite a self-employed applicant with irregular income.
  2. What is FOIR and how would you calculate it for a salaried applicant?
  3. How does LTV differ between a home loan and a gold loan, and why?
  4. What red flags would make you decline or refer a loan application for further review?
  5. How do you balance disbursal-speed targets against credit quality?
  6. How do you manage a team through a target miss without it becoming a blame exercise?

Scenario-Based Questions

  1. An applicant's bureau score is borderline (650) but they have a strong banking relationship and stable income. How do you decide?
  2. You spot a discrepancy between the income stated on the application and the bank statement. What's your next step?
  3. A branch is pushing you to approve a loan faster than your standard TAT because the customer is considering a competitor. How do you respond?

Interview Tips

  • Be fluent in the loan lifecycle end-to-end: sourcing -> login -> underwriting -> sanction -> disbursal -> servicing.
  • Know the difference between policy-based (rule engine) and judgment-based underwriting, and where each applies.
  • If it's a fintech/NBFC role, expect questions on alternate data (UPI transaction history, utility bills) used for thin-file customers.
  • Expect at least one people-management question (a target miss, a difficult team member, cross-functional conflict) - have a real example ready.
